The City of Napa (approx. 78,000) is the business and residential hub of the world-renowned Napa Valley, located 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. It’s also home to hundreds of wineries and thousands of other businesses that fuel a vibrant year-round economy.
Reporting to the Community Resources and Development Director, the Chief Building Official leads a team of eight including building inspectors, a plans examiner, and permit technicians, supported by a $2 million operating budget.
This role calls for a collaborative leader with strong customer service instincts and emotional intelligence, capable of navigating competing priorities and diverse professional perspectives. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with sound administrative and people-management skills.
Requires four years of building inspection + plan check experience in a management/supervisory role and a bachelor’s degree. Two years of college-level coursework in structural, mechanical or civil engineering, architecture or closely related field and six years’ experience may be substituted. Must also possess ICBO certification as a plans examiner and a building inspector and CABO certification as a Building Official.
Current salary range is $160,433 - $193,804 (will increase to $163,642-$197,680 on July 1, 2026) DOQE, with excellent benefits. Recruitment closes Monday, February 16, 2026.
