Located on the San Francisco Bay Peninsula, the City of San Mateo (pop. 103,000) is the largest municipality in San Mateo County. The City is supported by approximately 550 FTEs with an FY 2025-26 operating budget of $272 million and a capital budget of $61.5 million.
 
The City seeks an engaged and passionate local government leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills. The Assistant City Manager will work closely with the City Manager, serving as a trusted partner in advancing citywide priorities, coordinating departmental initiatives, and engaging effectively with the community. This collaborative, team-oriented professional will approach their work with compassion, facilitating authentic relationships with staff, community stakeholders and regional partners.
 
Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible administrative experience in municipal government, including four (4) years of supervisory and management experience, and three (3) years’ experience managing core municipal functions, are expected. Executive-level experience as an ACM, DCM, or department head, along with a Master’s degree, is desirable.
 
The salary range is $272,126 - $300,019 + competitive benefits. Closes at 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 29, 2026
